On Sunday, April 1st from 2 to 4 p.m., Walden and St. Mary's College are co-organizing the 2nd Annual Walk a Mile in Her Shoes-St. Mary's event at the St. Mary's College Track. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes-St. Mary's is a free, public event organized to bring awareness and prevention information to the community about preventing and ending gender violence, such as sexual assault, rape, dating violence, and relationship abuse. This event is unique in the way in which men participate: men are asked to walk a lap (or more) around the track in women's heels. It is a fun and engaging way of drawing attention to important issues that most folks find difficult or embarrassing to discuss. As you can imagine, the uniqueness of the event does draw media attention! We have decided to expand on that this year by asking local male leaders to come out and participate in a Leader's Lap at the event. What better way for men in leadership roles throughout our community to set a positive example for standing against gender violence than in joining together to do so?
Leaders in the community come from many avenues, including the public services and safety community, the educational community, the business community, the non-profit community, service industry community, and faith community. This invitation is open to leaders from all of those avenues, as well as to up-and-coming leaders and leaders who set an example to others in their lives by their own actions. Please consider getting involved in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes-St. Mary's in any of the following ways: by signing on for the Leader's Lap, forming a team of walkers, and/or passing this on to other people you know who may want to get involved. Information and registration for the Leader's Lap are available here or call us at (301) 327-2555.
