Family Services

Family Counseling in Southern Maryland

Addiction and other behavioral health disorders are difficult health issues for those that have them and the people who love them. It is not unusual for conflicts to occur, especially when symptoms are active. But even when things are at their worst, help is available to promote better communication and self-care.

Family services at Walden are here to provide assistance and support for family members who have a loved one struggling with substance misuse, substance use disorder or another behavioral health issue. Our goal is both to help you understand how behavioral health disorders can affect a loved one’s thinking and behavior and how you can be a source of support for them without enabling.

Our family support services include:

  • Family Intervention – Walden offers assistance to those with a loved one struggling with substance use with the intervention process. Walden has therapists trained in the CRAFT intervention model which is considered a best practice intervention method.
  • Family Counseling – counseling is offered for a wide variety of behavior issues ranging from substance use to help with the effects of family issues or traumatic events on children.
  • Family Recovery Support - Peer recovery specialists host a weekly Family & Friends meeting. SMART Recovery is considered a best practice model for supporting family members whose loved one may or may not be ready for change.

HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD AFTER A TRAGEDY HAS OCCURRED

  • Listen to your child's concerns, if any, and reassure them of their safety
  • Keep an eye on your child's emotional and physical state
  • Make time to talk about the tragedy that has occurred
  • Limit the amount of media being viewed and used by yourself, and child
  • Try your best to maintain an everyday routine
  • Seek any outside help to make sure your child is expressing their feelings
  • Make sure to answer any questions your child may have about the tragedy
  • Focus on positive things rather than the negative
  • Discuss with your child how they can take positive action in an event of a tragedy, and discuss ways they can give back in return
